i've been looking at some beautiful weddings these holidays. realized that ribbon fringes (coined it myself as i don't know how else to describe it) are in trend for many weddings.

for someone who prefers quick and easy solution anytime over pure aesthetics, i think this is a simple solution for wedding decoration. you just need the ribbons, a pair of scissors and probably a pole for you to loop the ribbons around it. depending on the colour palettes chosen, you will also be able to articulate your wedding theme.

for those of you who don't know... Kin Soon joined this year's Gift and Premium Fair 2011 at Sands. during old times, we used to join trade fairs and exhibitions at the old world trade centre (now Harbourfront). it's been a long time since we did it and we are now back at it!

we are thankful for the experiences and lessons we have from this fair.

this exhibition is our first but it won't be our last. we want to share with others our ribbon loves.

buttons and ribbons = happiness

it's 2010. a brand new year to start... with buttons! what's the relationship between buttons and ribbons? infinite fun in crafting! especially with the funky prints we have below:

the wooden material provides a rustic feel to the buttons. the playful prints of flowers reminds me of the flower power hippie times of the 60s. the colours of the flowers can be brought out with the use of red hues (red, maroon, burgundy, wine, purple... the list goes on) of ribbons.
similar wooden material with blue/purplish floral prints. i can picture the use of blue/green hues ribbons for that soothing combination of floral sea. my personal favourite will be using a mint green ribbon.

my favourite button! rainbow in a button! just looking at them makes me happy.

sweetheart! match it with white, ivory or pink shades ribbon for that perfect combination.

it looks quite alike to the previous button post except with brighter colours (somewhat louder).

red spots on yolk yellow. i am imagining it with bright red ribbon to bring out the spots! or orange?

argyle pattern of fuchsia, apple green and purple. the right concoction for a cheerful colour palette. (:

the flowers remind me of hibiscus and orchid. don't know why but they do. very pretty.

other than buttons, we also have an easy solution to add that needed festivity into plain ribbons... chinese character of prosperity for lunar new year decorations, hampers or gifts.

what i love about them...

i love the scalloped edges. it's like lace yet not over-the-top...

who said check is boring? it never dies. another classic addition to ribbon collections.

i love...

the ruffles of course!

look a little closer and you can see heart shaped patterns cut-out. good for mixing and matching with other plain ribbons. adds a little love.

combination of fancy ribbons! any ribbon fanatic dream come true.

i love cotton ribbon. it has such a "raw" feel to it.

every christmas classic choice.

say colourful! adds a little colour to your gift.

layer this lace cut-out with another ribbon or use it as trimmings around your card.

i love imagining the use of this... just by looking at it!

metallic woven ribbon never fails to add that shine to your gift.

go crazy with these new additions.

like i said, get glamourous with this extra blingbling metallic ribbon

new baby designs for all new babies!

i love the tinsel.

add a tinge of festive mood to your gift by using this twisted cord, on its own or with a combination of other ribbon!

crafting memories

remember back in the days when handmade gifts are still cherished memories? i used to gather remnants of my art & craft's supplies to make birthday, mother's day, father's day, chinese new year, christmas... etc etc etc... all kind of cards.

one of those time with many opportunities to craft more than one card is definitely teachers' day. above is a glimpse of the past through one little child's gift to her teacher. (:

with new arrivals flooding in, it's hardly the right time to post such randomness. but i can't resist posting these satin colours which were coincidentally placed together while we do our regular stock check. licorice, cranberry and burgundy... darkness.

sweet 16: ribbon party

it's been more than a year since we started this blog... and this is only our 16th post. a rather dismal performance in quantity of entries... but fear not, this is our sweet 16 post! and be warned for the sweetness to come below!

i can imagine... white-or-pink-or-red-or-creamy-or-even khaki/dark chocolate wrapping paper frame with the sweetness of strawberries. feels so japanese gift-wrap style. something for valentine's day gift. or for the little girl in us (:halloween isn't widely celebrated in singapore, but the contrasting black print of jack-o'-latern and the cat (detailed with green eyes!) is simply pretty for crafting! look at the starry starry night above those white layered clouds... sweetness, again.
i love the weaveee-s (as i call them). they range from funkylicious to folk-artsy to sweet feminine floral power. always feel that using them on gifts provide a more personal touch... the intricacy of woven ribbon just makes it more special than printed ribbons.what did i say... pure sweetness! fluttering butterflies for a pastel coloured theme. be it the garden wedding or a girl's gift.this ribbon is the perfect embellishment for a new-born's gift. frame it above white broader satin ribbon to create the perfect fluffy bow.
can you resist these reversibles? delightful pink-brown combination.i like the fresh red and black's stark contrast on the white grosgrain ribbon. the clarity of the prints remind me of the little ladybug i saw in my childhood. cheerful combination for the children's gift or hairbow.ice-cream, cupcakes, donuts and lollipop... my sweet tooth is aching for these sugary treats. a really small collection to woven preppy stripes. we have the classic black and white, the melon-coral combination and lastly the baby pink-blue stripes.

think the sweetness ends here? this is certainly not the last update for this year. stay tune...

craft it: corsages!

corsages and boutonniere tend to be an overlooked detail in wedding. locally, corsages are sometimes used to differentiate relatives, friends or helpers from a roomful of guests.

to add a personal touch, some brides may even choose to craft their own corsages for their entourage of maids of honour or known in mandarin as "jie-mei"s. these creations can be done using the traditional fresh flowers or the recently more popular choice of silk/fabric flowers.

the colours to a wedding

ever wonder how to define the colours to one's wedding? is it the favourite colour(s) of the wedding couple? is it the season (i.e. spring, summer, autumn or winter)? or is it the trend of that period (dictated by the fashion walkway)?

maybe the answer is a little combination of every answer to the above questions. whether that's the answer or not, i will leave it for the brides and grooms to mull over (;

another happy find over my daily blog-surf is snippet & ink daily wedding inspiration. what i really like about it is the author's vivid titles to each inspiration boards. try guessing the colours to the inspiration board by just looking at the titles and see if you visualize the same colours as the author.

furthermore, the author's emotive take on colour theme shows that the play of colours provides character and elements to the wedding. for each inspiration board, moods were elicited from the choice of photos and colours.

don't you love these colour palettes? rather than just using the conventional white and ivory, these colour palettes show how strong colours or the play of a variation of several colours can create the perfect concoction for a fun wedding theme. (: the personalities from these colours will surely make the wedding a memorable one.

many many many types of ribbons. how do you choose?
take a look at some of the various classifications :)

if you want something pure glamourous with literal bling-bling... go for metallic ribbon

do not be mistaken, metallic ribbons are cloth ribbons. you are still able to make a bow with them. however, they tend to be stiffer due to the metallic threads used. these ribbons has the closest colour to the real gold and silver. gold or silver satin/organza ribbons usually capture the shade but still fail to create the shine (hence being misunderstood as brown or grey) .

satin is one of the popular and common type of cloth ribbons used. satin weaves tend to have a luster due to its smooth surface. depending on the materials used for the weave, the luster will differ. satin ribbon has always been a classic choice for wedding. its opacity provides emphasis to the decoration or floral arrangement.

organza is a transparent cloth ribbon. as such this ribbon is often added to decoration or arrangement to create a softer appearance. the sheer of the ribbon allows organza to provide colours to crafts yet not too much contrast.

grosgrain is gaining popularity as a choice for wedding or corporate gifts due to its luxe texture. there's a sense of grandeur attached to the ribbon. due to its weave, it tends to be thicker as compared to satin. in addition, the ribbed texture makes the ribbon stiffer.

there are still many types of ribbon. if you can name a fabric, most probably it has been woven into ribbon before. so the list of type of ribbons... really never ends (:

i found some beautiful images of table display, decorations and wedding ideas using tissue pom-poms from martha stewart. this is an age-old craft that is pretty common. instructions were available on martha stewart's website but i had to give it a try to test if it's really as simple as it looks. fortunately, it is! (:

over my daily blog reads on various packaging sites, i stumbled upon many products with interesting image concept. ribbons are often used as the finishing touch to these products packaging. the next three images collates some of my finds...

there are many ways to use the ribbon on the packaging. instead of the conventional cross-bow (where you tie across the box and tie a butterfly bow), there are tail-bows (just a knot and two sleek-cut ribbon tail), loop bows and even just using it to strap the label onto the box.

colour-wise, ribbons with the right colour can bring focus to the brand or a certain print. rather than seeking ribbon colours which always contrast with the package, subtle colours within the package's print pattern can also be used and create varying colour palettes (i.e. such as the white shimmery organza in the blue-brown variation).

obsession with packaging -in general- and ribbons brought me to this website which consolidates interesting design concepts in product packaging.

visually appealing and coordinated packaging just make you feel like laying your hands on one of those products! it's interesting to realize how details like colours, typography and functionality of the packaging creates a branding to the product. as quoted from their website, it's brand packaging.

it goes to show how little efforts into packaging produce ripple effects to products, their brand and the company.

inspired by colour themed inspiration boards used in wedding website, i collated images from the packaging or fashion industry to create one board of my own!

meet the colour - sleek black

with no coincidence, most of the packaging here involves ribbon. (:

the top left corner... a simple white box framed with black grosgrain ribbon. the grosgrain weaving provides texture to the otherwise plain box. the ribbon is embossed with silver prints for brand prominence. to emphasize on the products sheer opulence, the ribbons are sealed onto the product with a wax seal.

the all black packaging for vera wang's jewellery - from its box, to the tissue wrapper and even the ribbon. with reference from the packaging designer's website, the ribbon does not only serve aesthetically but also functionally as a handle to the box!

the bottom right hand corner... the white box and the simple black satin's contrast brings focus to the black print on the box depicting the product within the box. the quirky play in its packaging informs consumers of the box's content simply with the product's silhouette, clean and sleek.

the black prints on white background shown in the pencil dress and paper bags seem to reiterate the fantastic combination of black and white. black on its own is dark and sleek, with white this sleekness is emphasized with a clean-cut practicality. good for the minimalist feel...

black is gaining popularity in asian packaging but still not often use due to cultural taboo with the colour. these days, these taboos are overcome with appreciation of the colour and the delightful palettes it conjures with other colours.

colours are what make our world so rich and intensely beautiful. play around with them to customize a colour palette or theme you can truly call your own. through the colours you choose, your personality and feeling can be conveyed.

be daring in using colours and you will be surprise with the results.

below are some superb links (which shows and not just tell) of beautiful coordination and experiment of colours. they are wedding/fashion related (probably cos colours play quite a major part in these two areas). the ideas from these websites though, should be able to apply for all occasions such as the boldness in using certain colours.

one. inspiration board readers submit collage of images which inspire a wedding theme/colour palette. colour questions? there is also a section where readers post questions on colour palettes to use for their wedding. you will be surprised at how images from different sources can converge into a single theme.

a little favour to a friend

in the midst of hustle-bustling for the showcase, a little favour was done for one of our good friend. :)

the wedding theme was pink and white. the angpow box was a traditional red and there were little baskets for the flower girls.

pink accents - tinge of pink on white to provide a subtle glow to the arrangement. even though the theme was pink and white, there can be other colours to provide a more cohesive colour palette. these colours are like supporting characters to the main cast, bringing out certain elements within the main colours.

little details such as twining smooth silky satin around the handle and lining the basket with laces provide a softer look to the stiff rattan basket.

pink the warm shade of summer. mix it with different colours and portray different themes.
neutral shades such as the classics white and ivory give you a soft feminine timeless look. aquamarine, brown and olive green refreshes pink with pure sweetness. match pink with grey, silver or black and the combination is striking sophistication.

use the colours to create your desired themes.
